Yemen’s “Manhattan of the Desert” Boasts 400 Habitable Clay Towers || Green Prophet
Yemen has a UNESCO World Heritage Site secret, but it’s not so well-kept anymore. One of the most impressive examples of earth architecture that has survived for hundreds of years, the Shibam district in Hadramaut province boasts 437 tall clay towers, of which 400 are still habitable. It is unclear when this “Manhattan of the desert” was originally built, though construction of at least one of the mosques probably occurred during the reign of Abbasid Caliph Harun al Rashid (786-809), according to World Architecture News.
Once a popular destination for caravan traders, Shibam fell into disrepair when the routes dried up, so in 2000 GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) and the GOPHCY (General Organisation for the Preservation of Historic Cities of Yemen) launched the Shibam Urban Development Project (SUDP) to help the city and its residents to thrive once more. Already more than 100 homes have been restored, and sustainable agriculture and cottage industries reintroduced.

THIS IS ZAINAB AL HOSNI’S CORPSE - ***VERY GRAPHIC*** - This is the video of her corpse. She was skinned alive, burned and then decapitated. Both her arms were also severed from her torso. She was 18 years old.

Her brother was a well known activist and was wanted by Bashar Al Assad’s forces. His little sister Zainab was kidnapped by Bashar’s Thugs to force him to turn himself in, when he did, he was murdered by the regime and his sister was not released. Bashar’s Militia asked the family to come collect his body from the military hospital and to their horror they found their daughter in the state that you see in the video. The family was told in order to release the body, they must agree not to hold a funeral for her.

This is Bashar Al Assad. This is Maher Al Assad. This is the Syrian Regime. Mercilessly torturing and killing young girls …. just to stay in power for one more day.

Bashar and his family and his followers will rot in hell.

Thanks to @b6y5 for sharing the video

Note: Some activists have asked that no one share this video as to protect her honor. My opinion is that (unless her family specifically says this) it would actually be a dishonor to not share this video with the world. Zainab will not die in vain. She is our little sister. Her honor will live forever, no one can take that from her, not even Bashar Al Assad.

PLEASE DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH. A friend was giving me problems because she said I always attack people who are with Bashar. At this point…are you kidding me? Is this some type of sick joke? Everytime I talk to someone who supports Bashar I’m going to make it a point to attack them. If you’re hearing and seeing these things and you sit and talk to a Bashar supporter and act all buddy-buddy, than you’re just a disgusting to me as these people. They’re taking people and torturing them. TORTURE. The word has lost it’s value because of how often it’s been used throughout this revolution. Old men are crying for them to stop the beatings, old women are being beaten in front of their husbands, young women are being raped, children are being tortured, young men are being shot. Now this? Complete mutilation? This is the most horrific thing I’ve ever come across, this is the worst act of violence I’ve ever known of in the history of the world.

Middle East Designers Embrace The “Abaya” - Dr. Jay

Young Muslim women who adhere to more strict Islamic tradition continue to push boundaries when it comes to personal style choices.

Das, a high-end fashion label based in Dubai run by gorgeous sisters Hind and Reem Beljafla, puts the abaya front and center as part of its collections. Abayat are most often black and either a large square of fabric draped from the shoulders or head or a long caftan that covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands.

Hind Beljafla was recently interviewed for a video project by Brownbook (the “urban guide to the Middle East”) and Hypebeast. She talks about the abaya (“to be able to design the abaya, you have to understand it”) and incorporating new elements such as leather, feedback from style icons Christian Louboutin, Tom Ford and Diane von Furstenberg and more.
